LIVE MUSIC, DANCE, AND LIVE ACTION-PAINTING COLLIDE IN RADICAL 360° IMMERSIVE PERFORMANCE: "BLUE NOTES OF BROKEN SOIL"
Crescent Window proudly announces the premiere of Blue Notes of Broken Soil, an immersive, multi-disciplinary performance blending nature-infused musical stylings by genre bending multimedia collective Crescent Window led by vocalist, Annie Ellicott, with lyrical ballet and live action-painting into a visceral eco-narrative performed by choreographer Justine Rusk. Showing Saturday, July 18th at Contemporary Arts of Tulsa, this boundary-pushing event wraps the audience in a 360-degree sensory experience tracking the cycle of harmonious play, human carelessness, nature’s violent retaliation & ultimate ecological rebirth.
Breaking the traditional theater setup, Blue Notes of Broken Soil places the audience in a surround-sound circle. At the center is a towering matrix of industrial scaffolding and multi-leveled, suspended clear panes.
Throughout the performance, dancer Justine Rusk scales and hangs from the scaffolding, representing human industrial dominance and carelessness. Using her body as a literal paintbrush, she dips into saucers of vibrant pigment placed around the set, streaking the transparent panes in real-time to visually track the scarring of the earth.
Encircling the space is a genre bending multimedia collective ensemble costumed entirely as elements of the wild. Blending traditional instruments—guitar, keys, drums and collective invented instruments, a live vocalist with the organic, fracturing sounds of the earth itself, the band integrates the rhythmic snapping of branches and the rattling of seed pods directly into the score performed by collective members Lindsey Overstreet, Paully Steele, Peter Tomshany, and Annie Ellicott. Beautiful costuming by stagehand, Cara Cox.
